It’s Garage Sale Season—Are You Ready?

With Memorial Day already behind us, it’s time to look forward to other summertime activities. One of the most popular summer traditions is the neighborhood garage sale. It’s time to reward the hard work you did while spring cleaning and organizing your home, and give the unneeded items you found while cleaning a new home.

If you’re participating in your neighborhood garage sale, the process of organizing your sale items can be daunting and overwhelming. But, despite the potential stress, attracting shoppers to your treasures is also part of the fun! You need to strategize and develop a plan, which is where we come in to help.

In the weeks before your sale, go through each room of your home with a box. If you find unused and unopened cooking utensils in your kitchen drawers, place them in the box. If there are shelves of unread, or already read, books in your home, it’s time to put new price tags on them. Then, tackle your bedroom and closet. Is there furniture in your bedroom that you’re not using (old dressers, desks, etc.)? Are there clothes in your closet that you haven’t worn in years? Add them to the box. Going room by room will make your garage sale planning more organized and stress-free!

When it comes time to have the sale, you know that you have great items—but do your potential customers? Make sure to have plenty of prominent signage. Get creative, and have fun with your ads! Consider having refreshments (like water or lemonade) available for guests if it’s hot outside. For parents bringing young children along, be sure to have a station or area where children can color or play board games. These are just a few ways to make sure your sale stands out even more!

Not everything will sell, of course. But, don’t despair! If you have leftover items that didn’t sell, do not bring them back into your home where they’ll just sit in boxes and collect dust for another year. Avoid the clutter and do a good deed at the same time by donating these items to us! ClothingDonations.org will pick up your donations for you, making it incredibly easy for you to keep a clean, clutter-free home for the summer. Even better, your donation will help fund our veterans programs. You can visit our website for more details and to schedule your donation pickup time.

Happy Garage Sale-ing!

Yard Sales Everywhere!

The start of summer means garage sale season is right around the corner. Make sure your sale is a success! Better Homes and Gardens suggests using impactful language on your sign, displaying prices visibly, and having a play or coloring station for kids visiting your sale with their parents. Make Room for New Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is behind us now, but we hope that all of the mothers out there had a great day celebrating the special work they do every day in raising their kids. We especially want to extend happy Mother’s Day wishes to all of the military moms who are serving overseas and weren’t able to be with their children — and to the moms who are raising their children while their husbands serve.

If you’re a mom with young children, you probably received homemade gifts that your children made while at school. Whether it’s an art project, handmade card, or other thoughtful, adorable gift, you’ll want to show it off for the next few weeks. Looking around your home, though, you might realize that you don’t have the surface space to properly show your gift off.

It might be time for you to tackle some spring cleaning, or take inventory of your home decor. Do you have picture frames that are better at collecting dust than preserving memories? Is that painting above your mantel carrying sentimental value, or is it a placeholder? Go through the rooms in your home where you have knick-knacks, paintings, lamps and other home decor items that may no longer be needed or wanted.

If they’re covered in dust or you’ve actually forgotten that they’re there, it’s probably time to get rid of them. Don’t think they’ll sell in your annual garage sale? Donate them to us! Along with  clothes and kitchenware, we can collect decor donations. All you have to do is visit our website, schedule a donation pickup time, and place your items in a bag or box marked “for donation.” We’ll take care of the rest while to admire your Mother’s Day gifts! Your donation helps fund our veterans programs, so donate today!

(And don’t worry dads—your day is coming up soon!)

Summer Vacation Doesn’t Have to Mean Summer Clutter!

We can hear it now—the final bell ringing that announces the end of another school year, the bus pulling up to your driveway, and dropping your kids off for a fun, sunshine-filled summer vacation. Or maybe you’re returning home with a college student who is all finished with their first year.

Either situation means that your house will be full of people all day, which makes it more difficult to maintain a clean and organized home. What’s more, your kids will be bringing home locker storage units, unused school supplies, and dorm room furniture that they may no longer need.

If you just spring cleaned and organized your belongings for garage sales, you don’t want to refill your home with more stuff! What can you do?

Consider having the kids immediately sort through their belongings as soon as they get home. In the excitement for summer vacation, they may drop their things at the door and run off to their first summer adventure. By having your kids sort through their school supplies and determine whether they’ll need the futon for their dorm room next year, you can get ahead of the clutter now.

Once they’ve sorted through their belongings, have them place unused school supplies and dorm room items, such as hangers or old clothes, into a box. Then visit ClothingDonations.org to schedule a donation pickup time. We will gladly take any dorm room furniture that is in good condition, too.
